Critical Process Determination

Defining Critical Processes: The Foundation of Business Continuity

Although every process within the organization is important, attempting to recover them all simultaneously during an Interruption leads to resource wastage and failure. The effectiveness of Business Continuity Management (BCM) begins with the clear definition of critical processes. Any plan that starts without or incorrectly executing this step risks making an investment in the wrong area.

At SCORE Consultancy, we meticulously execute this determination process, the first stage of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP), in light of your organization's mission and regulatory obligations. Our goal is to identify the processes that absolutely must not stop for your organization to survive an Interruption.

🔑 What Makes a Process Critical?

Defining a process as "critical" does not just depend on its operational importance; it is viewed through its time-related, multi-dimensional impacts:

  • Financial Impact: Leading to direct revenue loss or unforeseen costs if the process stops.

  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: The risk of violating legal obligations or sector regulations (e.g., data Security, reporting).

  • Reputation Damage: Causing difficult-to-remedy, permanent damage to the trust of customers, suppliers, or the public.

  • Safety and Human Life: Being processes that directly affect life and property Safety.

  • Dependency Chain: Being a prerequisite (predecessor) for other critical processes to function.

🗺️ SCORE's Critical Process Determination Methodology

SCORE's process determination approach not only takes the opinions of managers but also cross-checks processes with quantitative and qualitative criteria.

  • Compilation of the Organizational Process Inventory
  • Application of Pre-Criticality Criteria
  • Scope Definition and Hierarchy Establishment

Phase 1: Compilation of the Organizational Process Inventory

  • Complete Mapping: Listing all primary (value-creating) and secondary (supporting) business processes across the organization, considering inter-departmental interactions.

  • Defining Process Owners: The person responsible for each process and the primary contact points for the Business Continuity Team (BCT) are determined.

Phase 2: Application of Pre-Criticality Criteria

In this phase, every process is screened against pre-determined SCORE criteria.

  • Time Constraint: It is determined how long after the process stops (hours/days) the financial, legal, or reputational impact will reach an unacceptable level. This forms the basis of the Maximum Tolerable Period of Disruption (MTPD) concept.

  • Impact Threshold: It is assessed whether the estimated cost (e.g., X TL or Y% customer loss) arising from the process Interruption exceeds the organization's acceptable threshold.

  • Regulatory Obligation: It is clarified whether the process directly results in a legal obligation if it fails to operate continuously.

Phase 3: Scope Definition and Hierarchy Establishment

  • Critical Process List: The final list of processes that pass the pre-criteria is compiled.

  • Prioritization: These critical processes are hierarchically ranked based on their MTPD values and impact analysis. This ranking provides a roadmap for Disaster Recovery (DR) and Recovery plans (strategies).

  • Stakeholder Approval: The established Critical Process Hierarchy is approved by senior management and all relevant departments to ensure its adoption across the organization.

🎯 Our Key Output: A Focused Process Hierarchy

The final output of this service is a clear, indisputable roadmap that forms the foundation of the Business Continuity Plan:

Critical Process Inventory:

The approved list of the most vital processes for which RTO/RPO objectives will be set.

Predecessor/Successor Dependencies:

The dependency relationships of critical processes on each other and on supporting IT systems.

MTPD Values:

Maximum Tolerable Periods of Disruption to be used in determining Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
