Keeping Business Continuity Plans Alive
The value of a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is measured not only by the quality of the documentation but also by the ability of teams to execute that plan during a Crisis. Training & Capacity Development and Drills are the most critical links in the BCP lifecycle; they keep the plans current, prepare the teams, and integrate corporate Resilience into the organizational culture.
At SCORE Consultancy, we approach the Training & Capacity Development provided within the scope of Business Continuity Management (BCM) not as passive information sharing, but as a practical competency development process that ensures the recovery of critical processes within the RTO (Recovery Time Objective).
Why are BCM Training & Drills Critical?
Business Continuity focused Training & Capacity Development and Drills directly serve your Business Continuity objectives:
Process Recovery Assurance: Ensures the competence of critical process Recovery plans teams to take action within the defined RTO objectives.
Minimizing Error Margin: Minimizes human errors that may occur in manual steps under high stress and ensures the correct procedure is applied.
Plan Validation: Tests the feasibility, usability, and currency of the BCP, revealing missing or conflicting steps.
ISO 22301 Compliance: Fulfills the essential preparation and evaluation requirement mandated by ISO 22301, the international Business Continuity Management System standard.
🗺️ SCORE's BCM-Focused Drill Methodology
SCORE adopts a three-phased, objective-oriented approach to testing Business Continuity Plans:
- Objective-Oriented Design and Scenario Development
- Execution and Critical Function Testing
- Evaluation, Reporting, and Improvement
Phase 1: Objective-Oriented Design and Scenario Development
BIA-Based Scenarios: Drill scenarios focus on the Interruption of your most critical processes and highest-risk threats, as determined by the Business Impact Analysis (BIA).
RTO and RPO Measurement: Drill objectives are set to measure whether the plan meets the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) metrics defined in your plan.
Role-Based Planning: Individualized test steps are designed for each team, such as the Business Continuity Team (BCT), IT Disaster Recovery Team, and Logistics Team, consistent with their duties within the plan.
Phase 2: Execution and Critical Function Testing
Business Continuity Drills focus on the practical process rather than theoretical presentation:
Tabletop Simulations: Scenario-based discussions are conducted, led by senior management and BCT leaders, testing the plan's decision-making flow and critical communication chain.
Functional Drills: The critical business process is verified by the step-by-step execution of the plan at an alternative worksite (backup office) or using backup systems (DRP). These tests demonstrate how quickly and efficiently the process is recovered after the Interruption.
Supplier Drills: The Business Continuity capabilities and coordination of third-party suppliers and business partners playing critical roles in the BCP are tested.
Phase 3: Evaluation, Reporting, and Improvement
Scorecard Analysis: The performance of the BCT actions during the Drill against the RTO objectives is analyzed in detail and reported with quantitative data.
GAP Closure: All deficiencies identified in the Drill are determined as requirements for BCP revision, additional Training & Capacity Development, or Technological Solutions investment.
Continuous Improvement: Since BCM is not a one-time project but a management system requiring continuity, action plans following the Drill are tracked, and the next Drill is planned.
